VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Keuka College Softball team opened their 2018 season at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Bash in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Keuka College (0-2) lost their opener to nationally-ranked Randolph-Macon College 11-0 in five innings. The Wolves then fell in the nightcap to Frostburg State 8-3.
#13 Randolph-Macon College 11 vs. Keuka College 0 – 5 innings
Randolph-Macon jumped out on Keuka College with a pair of runs in the first two innings. The Yellow Jackets then tacked on six runs in the third to lead 10-0. Keuka College had difficulty with the Randolph-Macon pitcher as the Wolves struck out 11 times in the game. Keuka had just one hit as they fell to the Yellow Jackets 11-0 in five innings.
Lead Wolf: Junior pitcher Janessa Vaadi did a good job in relief to slow the Yellow Jacket hitters. She pitched two innings and allowed only one run on one hit, while striking out a pair of batters.
Frostburg State 8 vs. Keuka College 3
The Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Wolves responded in the third. Brittany Vergason singled to lead off the inning and was then bunted to second. Katelyn Warren singled her home to tie the game. Later with two outs, Keuka College took advantage of a Frostburg error to score a run and plated a third on a bases loaded walk to lead 3-1.
In the bottom of the frame, Frostburg State tied the game up with a pair of unearned runs. The 3-3 scored would continue to the sixth. With two outs, a Keuka College error extended the inning and led to five unanswered runs by the Bobcats. The Wolves would not have an answer in the seventh as they fell to Frostburg State 8-3.
Lead Wolf: Sophomore centerfielder Alexa Brown led the Keuka College offense with three hits in the game, a career-high.
- Keuka College is now 0-2 all-time against Randolph-Macon College and Frostburg State
- The Wolves faced these two schools in the 2016 Beach Bash. Despite the pair of losses, Keuka College went on to win the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship that season
- Randolph-Macon was the fifth game Keuka College has played against a nationally-ranked team in the last three seasons. Overall, Keuka College is 2-11 against ranked opponents with their lone wins coming in a sweep of #4 ranked SUNY Cortland in 1999
- Katelyn Warren's RBI single against Frostburg State was the 100th hit of her career. She becomes the 10th player in Keuka College Softball history to reach that plateau
Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will conclude the Beach Bash on Saturday with a pair of games. Keuka College will open the day against St. Joseph's College from Brooklyn, N.Y. They will then face a tough test against Shenandoah University to finish off the tournament.
