Keuka College Softball Goes 1-1 on Saturday

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Keuka College Softball team earned their first win of the season, defeating Hunter College 6-1 on Saturday at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast. The Wolves would fall, however, in their second game to the host school, nationally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan.

Brittany Vergason and Samantha Blum each had three hits on Saturday for the Wolves (1-3). Freshman Jessie Hammers and juniors Katelyn Warren and Shannon Johnson each added a pair for Keuka. Johnson also drove in a pair for the Green and Gold. Colleen Mooney earned the win of Keuka over Hunter, going all seven innings, striking out five.

Keuka College 6 vs. Hunter College 1

The Wolves struck quickly with three straight hits to start the game. Blum scored one on a double and Warren had a sacrifice fly for the early lead. Hunter would get one back with a solo home run, but it would be all Keuka from that point. The Wolves got a run in the third from Johnson. An inning later, a bases loaded walked forced a run home for Keuka. The Wolves then got RBI singles from Janessa Vaadi and Shannon Johnson as Keuka would continue onto the 6-1 victory.

Born to Run: Jessie Hammers' career is just four games old, but the freshman has proved to be a threat at the top of the order for Keuka. The Wayland-Cohocton product stole three bases on Saturday against Hunter. She already sits in the top five of the North Eastern Athletic Conference for stolen bases this season.

Keuka College 0 vs. #11 Virginia Wesleyan 11, 5 innings

The host Marlins posted a run in the first and the second innings before exploding for five in the third. A leadoff single in the bottom of the second inning by Katelyn Warren would prove to be the only hit of the game for the Green and Gold. The nationally-ranked Marlines added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth as they defeated Keuka 11-0 in a five-inning game.

Lone Wolf: The second inning single by Katelyn Warren was Keuka's only hit of the game. The Green and Gold have not been no-hit in over 10 years. They last time Keuka was held hitless was against D'Youville College on April 11, 2006.

KC Notes:

  • It was the first time Keuka College has faced either Hunter College or Virginia Wesleyan
  • Keuka is now 0-5 against ranked opponents since the 2006 season
  • Samantha Blum continues to climb the all-time hit list at Keuka College. The senior now has 99 in her career, passing Jen Shaughnessy (2005-08) for ninth all-time

Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves will now return home and will have three weeks to prepare for their home opener. The Green and Gold will next take to the field on Saturday, March 25, hosting a doubleheader against Alfred University at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
