VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. -- The Keuka College Softball team earned their first win of the season, defeating Baruch College 7-4 in Virginia Beach. The Green and Gold would fall in their second game of the day to Frostburg State 11-2.
Keuka College (1-3) will return home and have a couple weeks off before their next game, which will be on March 30. The Wednesday doubleheader will also be the home opener for Keuka as the welcome RIT to the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Keuka College got out to a fast start in every sense of the phrase. Mackenzie Cole led off with a single and promptly stole second base. A batter later she stole third. After Allyson Muller walked, Cole and Muller performed a double-steal, with Cole scoring for the early lead. Mickenzie Palmer singled home Muller and Alysha Bachman followed that up with a two-run single, scoring Palmer and Katelyn Warren, who singled earlier in the inning. Overall in the top of the first, Keuka brought all nine batters to the plate, had four hits and four stolen bases to lead to four runs.
Liz Warren held the Bearcats off the bases the first time through the order and Keuka held a 5-0 lead after four innings. In the fifth, Mackenzie Cole doubled in Janessa Vaadi and Jessica Parmiter to make it 7-0 Keuka. It was Cole's second double of the game. Baruch would plate a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh, but Warren would strikeout the would be tying run to end the game, giving Keuka a 7-4 victory.
The second game of the day against Frostburg State did not go as well for the Green and Gold . Frostburg built an early lead over Keuka and continued to widen it as the game went on. Tally McDonald had a double for Keuka. Samantha Blum and Mickenzie Palmer would each drive in a run, but Keuka would fall to Frostburg State 11-2.
