Revamped Outdoor Adventure Program Kicks Off This Fall

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The 2018-19 will see an increase in outdoor and adventure programming at Keuka College. Over the summer, Keuka brought on Dan Mackey to head the program and he has quickly established an impressive fall slate.

Mackey has already developed programming for the incoming class of students during Wolf Week. The first program of the semester will be a hike to Conklin’s Gully on Sunday, September 2. The following week on September 6, Keuka will host open climbing at the challenge course on campus for 4pm to 7pm. Following the event, there will be an informational meeting on their fall break trip to Maine in October.

“We are excited to bring Dan on,” said Associate Director of Athletics Jon Accardi. “He is experienced and brings great energy and new ideas to help take our outdoor and adventure programs to the next level.”

Mackey brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Keuka College. He most recently served as the Recreation Supervisor for the City of Canandaigua. There he oversaw all of the recreation program and services for the city including their public beach operation at Kershaw Park. He also served on the Canandaigua Wellness Committee, helping to promote wellness with the City’s employees. Prior to that, Mackey was an outdoor outfitter helping to educate and prepare individuals, families, students, and scouts for outdoor excursions.

On the weekend of September 15 and 16, Mackey will lead a camping trip in the north country of New York. The group will go to Wellesley Island State Park in the Thousand Islands and then go white water rafter on the Black River during the trip. September will end with a sunrise kayak paddle on Keuka Lake on September 25.

“Dan will help promote and grow our outdoor program,” said David Sweet, Director of Athletics at Keuka College. “Outdoor and Adventure has always been a part of Keuka College and the co-curricular efforts. I know our current students and future students are excited for the growth of the program and its offerings.”

The primary trip in the semester will be the trek to Maine over fall break from October 5 to October 9. Mackey will lead the group through Acadia National Park, Cutler Coast, and Mount Katahdin on the trip.
