KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – The Keuka College Men's Volleyball team topped D'Youville College in four sets after falling in five to Medaille College earlier in the day at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Crossover at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.
Keuka College (3-7, 2-5 NEAC) was led by junior Connor Gail with 27 total kills on the day. Sophomore Christian Nickerson added nine kills in the first match and eight in the second for the Wolves. Spencer Avery finished with 82 assists on the day. The senior 42 assists in the first match against Medaille and 40 in the second against D'Youville. Junior Alex Riley had 8 blocks in the five-set loss to Medaille. Libero Nick Cantando finished with 39 digs on the day.
Keuka College 2 (21, 25, 25, 20, 12) vs Medaille College 3 (25, 22, 23, 25, 15)
In a back and forth first set, the Mavericks created separation towards the end of the set leading by a score of 22-19. Keuka made a comeback attempt, but the Wolves would drop the first set 25-21. The Wolves would answer back by winning the second set 25-22. Keuka lead by as many as 4 points in the third set, however the Mavericks would mount a comeback to tie the third at 19-19. Keuka would go on to win the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Medaille College, fighting to keep the match alive, would force a fifth set by winning the fourth 25-20. The fifth and final set would prove to be very even as the score would be tied at 10, 11, and 12 before the Mavericks would pull away for the win 15-12.
Lead Wolf: Senior Spencer Avery had a strong game for the Wolves. He finished with 42 assists. Avery also had 11 digs, four kills, and a pair of blocks in the loss.
Keuka College 3 (25, 19, 25, 29) vs D'Youville College 1 (23, 25, 23, 27)
In a tight first set, Keuka was able to create an 18-15 lead. The Wolves would turn that lead into a 25-23 first set victory. D'Youville came out and created an early 12-6 lead in the second set. The Spartans would ride that lead to a second set win to even the match at 1-1. The Wolves responded with a 25-23 win third set victory to regain the lead in the match 2-1. D'Youville came out strong in the fourth set, creating a 14-8 lead. The Wolves scored the next nine points in the set, eight of which came off the serve of freshman Soham Dave. Keuka would take a 20-18 lead, but D'Youville tied the match. Keuka staved off three set points to keep the fourth alive. The Wolves scored the final three points complete the comeback and win the fourth set by a score of 29-27, taking the match 3-1.
Lead Wolf: Senior Jared Kucko lead the team in kills with 15. Kucko also added seven digs and a block for Keuka.
- Keuka College improved to 4-3 all-time against D'Youville College
- Medaille College remains perfect against the Wolves. The Mavericks have won all seven meetings with Keuka College
- Spencer Avery fell one assist short of tying the record for most assists in a 5-set match. His 42 in the first match ranks second most all-time
- Nick Cantando's 21 digs against Medaille was the third most by a Keuka College player in a 5-set match
- Sophomore Alex Riley set a new career-high with eight total blocks against Medaille. His efforts were the third most blocks in a 5-set match in Keuka College history
Coming up for Keuka College: Keuka College will complete the NEAC Crossover on Sunday with a match against Hilbert College. The Hawks enter the match still looking for their first win on the season. Keuka is 6-1 all-time against Hilbert and have won all four meetings since the Hawks joined the North Eastern Athletic Conference in 2015.
