Men’s Volleyball Places 5th at Bard Invite

The Keuka College men's volleyball team earned a fifth-place finish at the annual Bard College Raptor Invitational, with the Storm dropping both matches Friday night before sweeping Sarah Lawrence College in three sets in the fifth-place match Saturday morning.

Keuka (4-10) won the first two sets against City College of New York by scores of 25-21 and 25-21, but CCNY stormed back and won the last three, 25-21, 25-19 and 15-13 in the opener Friday night.

In the nightcap, the Storm fell to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival SUNYIT by scores of 26-24, 25-12 and 25-18.

Taking on Sarah Lawrence College Saturday morning, the Storm dispatched of the Gryphons by scores of 25-8, 25-9 and 25-13.

Sophomore Connor Hinman (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) recorded a career-high 20 kills and added 13 digs for his third double-double of the season. Hinman hit .368 after recording six errors in 38 attempts as Keuka hit .213 as a team.

Hinman was one of seven student-athletes named to the all-tournament team. Hinman was joined by A.J. Davids (SUNYIT), Henry Kasiske (Bard), Liam Kaylor (Wells), Brian Yik Lim (CCNY), Nicholas Siriban (CCNY) and John Farruggia (Wells), named the Most Outstanding Player.

Sophomore Tom Campbell (Penfield, NY/Penfield) added 10 kills with 9 digs and 2 blocks and classmate Josh Makin (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) tallied 9 kills with 7 digs and 3 blocks in the loss to CCNY.

Campbell hit .207 with four errors in 29 attempts while Makin hit .263 with four errors in 19 attempts.

Senior Devin Lesch (San Diego, CA/El Cajon Valley) added seven kills with eight blocks and freshman Derek Hosken (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) had six blocks with five kills for Keuka, which had 23 total blocks in the loss.

Freshman John Sprague (Fairport, NY/Penfield) recorded a career-high 31 assists with 3 aces and 3 digs and junior Ryan Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) added 15 digs with two blocks vs. CCNY.

Taking on SUNYIT, Sprague recorded his second double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs, Hinman added six kills with five digs and Hosken had eight blocks with five kills for the Storm.

Campbell added 5 kills with 4 digs and 2 blocks and Kelly had seven digs with two aces for Keuka.

In the fifth-place match, freshman Jared Kucko (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and sophomore Aaron Rydzynski (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each recorded six kills while Kucko added five digs and sophomore Manny Colon (Rochester, NY/East) hit .571 with five kills and one error in seven attempts.

Freshman Brandon Mitu (Richmond, British Columbia/A.R. MacNeill) handed out a career-high 19 assists in two sets, sophomore Christopher Mooring (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) added four digs with three kills and Sprague tallied eight assists with four aces in the sweep for Keuka.

The Storm compiled 13 service aces in three sets and hit .274 as a team (31 kills with 14 errors in 62 attempts).

Keuka travels to Wells College on Saturday, March 1 for the second of four NEAC crossover competitions. The Storm will face SUNYIT at noon and Lancaster Bible College at 6 p.m. Saturday.
