Men’s Volleyball Falls in 2014 Opener

The Keuka College men's volleyball team kicked off the 2014 season with a straight-sets loss to Lasell (Mass.) College Friday night in the Johnson & Wales Tip-Off Tournament in Providence, R.I.

Sophomore Josh Makin (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) recorded five kills with two digs and junior Ryan Kelly (Clifton Springs, NY/Midlakes) added 12 assists with three kills, but Keuka fell by scores of 25-10, 25-23 and 25-11.

Freshman Derek Hosken (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) recorded three kills with three total blocks in his first collegiate match while sophomore Tom Campbell (Penfield, NY/Penfield) tallied three kills and freshman Brandon Mitu (Richmond, British Columbia) had two total blocks for the Storm (0-1).

Sophomore Christopher Mooring (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) added three kills with a service ace while classmate Connor Hinman (Lethbridge, Alberta/Catholic Central) added a team-high nine digs in the loss.

"Tonight we showed that we have a good foundation of talented student-athletes to build on for the rest of the season," said Ben Guiliano, in his second year guiding the Green and Gold.

"For certain stretches of the match, we executed very well."

Keuka, which in the program's first season captured the North Eastern Athletic Conference's (NEAC) postseason championship in 2013, takes on Regis (Mass.) College at noon and host Johnson & Wales University at 2 p.m. Saturday on day two of tournament action.
