Junior Austin Gerber (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) scored a career-high four goals as the Keuka College men's soccer team closed out the 2013 season with a 6-1 road win over SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon.
Keuka (7-6-2, 2-5-1 NEAC) missed out on qualifying for the NEAC postseason tournament, but ended the year strong, going undefeated (3-0-1) over its last four games.
Gerber, the reigning Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate Player of the Week, scored the Storm's first three goals as Keuka came out and dominated possession against the Fighting Tigers (1-14, 0-7).
Gerber started the scoring in the fifth minute, extended the lead to 2-0 with a blast from six yards out in the 17th minute and pushed the lead to 3-0 on a point-blank blast in the 29th minute.
Cobleskill got on the board on Mark Gaetano's tally in the 30th minute as the Storm took a 3-1 lead into intermission.
But Gerber completed his four-goal day with a score in the 51st minute, scoring from in close to give the Green and Gold a three-goal lead. He became the first Keuka men's soccer student-athlete with four goals in a game since John Mastrella (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) accomplished the feat in a 4-2 win over D'Youville College on Sept. 1, 2012.
Freshman Zach Briggs (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) converted his first collegiate goal in the 54th minute, and sophomore Joe Maier (Rochester, NY/Spencerport) finished the scoring off a deflected corner kick in the 81st minute.
Freshman Willie Romero (Jersey City, NJ/Union City) stopped a career-high nine shots in the win as he improved to 3-2-1 in six starts.
Gerber finished the year as the Storm's leader in goals (10) and points (23) and was tied for second in assists (3). He closed the year strong, scoring seven goals with two assists (16 points) over the final three games.
