Brockport Narrowly Edges Keuka in Shootout

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – For the first time in program history, the Keuka College Field Hockey team played to a shootout. The Wolves lost in the shootout 2-1 in nine rounds, falling to Brockport 1-0 on Friday.

Keuka College (0-1, 0-0 NEAC) got a great effort in goal from sophomore Kassidy Valentine. She made a career-high 14 saves in the game and then turned away seven of nine attackers during the shootout.

The Golden Eagles controlled much of the first half, outshooting Keuka 10-2 and holding a 4-0 advantage in corners. The Wolves stayed in the game thanks to Valentine. The sophomore turned away eight shots to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

Play leveled out in the second as both teams had a pair of corners. Like the first half, the Wolves were able to get a pair of shots against Brockport. In the game, Nicole Wilson and Alyssa Orsino tied for the team lead with three shots on goal apiece. Neither team would score in regulation and for just the second time in program history, Keuka College played in overtime.

Play opened up with both teams gaining quality chances in the extra time. Brockport was able to produce a breakaway from 30 yards out, but Valentine stood tall in goal, challenged the attacked, and forced a wide attempt. Keuka was able to flip the action in the later minutes of the second overtime. Brockport had to call on their goalie for a pair of saves as the game would finish 100 minutes tied at 0-0.

After both teams failed in their first two attempts in the shootout, Taylor Lessard found the back of the net for Keuka College. However the next shooter from Brockport scored as well. After five shooters, it was tied 1-1 and went to sudden victory. In the ninth round, Brockport scored and Keuka was unable to match it as the Golden Eagles defeated the Wolves 1-0 on Friday.

KC Notes:

  • Keuka has faced Brockport in all three seasons of Field Hockey and have lost to the Golden Eagles all three times. The previous two games were 4-1 Brockport victories
  • It was the second game in school history to go into overtime and the first to go to a shootout
  • The Wolves are now 1-1 in overtime games. They previous defeated Sweet Briar in 2015, 2-1 in the first overtime for the program's first ever victory

Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves face another tough opponent on Sunday as they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to face Hartwick College. The Hawks defeated the Wolves 5-1 last season.
