The Keuka College baseball team swept a pair of non-conference games from Alfred State Thursday afternoon, defeating the Pioneers 3-2 and 14-2 on a sunny afternoon at Kuhl Field in Keuka Park, N.Y.

The Storm (17-9) extended their winning streak to 10 games with the sweep.

In the opener, the Green and Gold won despite being outhit by the Pioneers (9-25) 6-4. Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, junior Conner Anderson (Missoula, MT/Sentinel) tied the score on an RBI groundout.

Alfred State reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth before the Storm pushed across an unearned run to tie it in the bottom of the inning.

After junior Dan Smith (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) allowed leadoff man Anthony Gonzalez to triple, Smith got back-to-back groundouts to keep Gonzalez on third. Following an intentional walk, Smith ended the threat when he induced Cullen Franz to ground out.

Anderson singled and advanced to second on an error to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-runner Patrick Campbell (Avon, NY/Avon) then advanced to third and crossed the plate with the winning run following a wild pitch as the Storm won the opener.

Sophomore Thomas Fowler (Batavia, NY/Elba) started and allowed one run on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk in 4 2/3 innings pitched.

Smith relieved Fowler and allowed an unearned run on two hits over 2 1/3 innings pitched to earn the win and improve to 2-0.

Senior Gavin Corbin (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) tripled while Anderson, senior Justyn Schuck (Hammondsport, NY/Hammondsport) and junior Jake Burachalk (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) added singles in the opener.

In the nightcap, Corbin and classmate Hector Mitaynes (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) each drove in three runs to power the Storm.

Mitaynes was 3-for-3 with four runs scored, junior Jon Borchert (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and senior Dylan Campbell (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson) added an RBI in the win.

Junior Zach Nobles (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) improved to 4-0 after holding the Pioneers to one run on five hits in four innings.

Seniors Greg Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) and Brandon Jacobs (Walworth, NY/Gananda) closed out the sweep. Starks allowed one run on three hits in two innings of relief while Jacobs pitched a perfect seventh inning, retiring the side on three straight groundouts to freshman shortstop Robert LaRue (Skillman, NJ/Montgomery).

With the score knotted at one heading to the third, Mitaynes keyed a four-run outburst with an RBI double that plated junior Tommy Drumm (Oswego, NY/Oswego).

Borchert and Corbin each had RBI in four-run fourth, and Mitaynes had an RBI single and Corbin added an RBI double during a four-run fifth as the Storm took a 13-1 lead and breezed to the win.

The Storm travel to first-place Gallaudet for a huge three-game NEAC series Saturday and Sunday. Keuka College and Gallaudet play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by a single nine-inning contest at noon Sunday.

The Bison (21-12, 9-3) lead Keuka College, SUNYIT and Penn State-Berks by one game for the top spot in the NEAC standings. The top four squads qualify for the NEAC postseason tournament, May 9-11.
